How Hemp Shampoo Helps to Protect Your Dog’s Fur

January 19, 2021
How Hemp Shampoo Helps to Protect Your Dog’s Fur

A relaxing bath is one of life’s great joys, but your dog might not entirely agree.

Getting your dog to have a bath can be a bit of a challenge, but luckily, hemp shampoo might be able to help.

With its soothing and healing qualities, hemp shampoo might be just the thing to help turn your dog’s bath time into a good pamper session.

What Is Hemp?

Hemp is a plant that is used industrially in the manufacturing of a range of products.

Hemp is a very versatile and useful plant. It is used to create hemp material, can be consumed in a variety of different forms (hemp flower, hearts, oil), and is especially valued for the therapeutic effects of some of its compounds.

The compounds include:

  • CBD
  • Vitamins
  • Omega-3s
  • Other fatty acids

But wait… doesn’t hemp cause a high?

Hemp is a close relative of the cannabis plant, but that doesn’t mean it causes the same effects.

Hemp and cannabis are very closely related, both from the same genus, Cannabis. However, there are some important differences between the two plants.

Both hemp and cannabis contain similar compounds, like cannabinoids, vitamins, and minerals. However, there is one compound found in large quantities that are missing (or only found in trace amounts) in hemp, THC.

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is a chemical compound called a cannabinoid, and it is responsible for the psychotropic effects of cannabis. However, because it isn’t found in hemp in high enough quantities to cause any type of high, you don’t have to worry about hemp products or extracts leaving your dog a little loopy.

Hemp Shampoo’s Skin-Boosting Properties

One reason to incorporate hemp shampoo into your dog’s bathing routine is because of its skin-soothing properties.

Hemp contains high levels of CBD, a cannabinoid with strong anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is a natural immune response, but when it occurs unchecked, it can lead to the development of a range of canine conditions, including inflammatory skin disease.

Inflammatory skin disease in dogs results in itchy and scaly skin, leaving your dog uncomfortable and more prone to infection. This is where CBD comes in.

Research tells us that CBD has strong anti-inflammatory properties, which could relieve inflammation, itchiness, and dry skin in your dog. One way that CBD might be able to reduce inflammation is by activating a type of receptor called GlyR. Activation of this receptor can induce the suppression of inflammation (1).

CBD has also proven itself as a skin aid, with one study finding that CBD could stop the overproduction of skin cells, which is the cause of the common skin condition psoriasis (2). CBD is an impressive skin-care ingredient that could do wonders for the health of your dog’s skin.

Hemp Shampoo Is Great for Your Dog’s Fur

As well as CBD, hemp is also a great source of the essential fatty acids omegas 3 and 6.

Omega-3 is an excellent treatment against skin disorders and a dehydrated coat thanks to its ability to trap moisture into the coat, improves the functioning of the skin barrier, and reduce common skin conditions like scaling and skin redness (3).

Omega-6 is thought to play an essential role in skin and hair health thanks to its potential anti-inflammatory effects. One study found that a type of omega-6 may reduce the symptoms of inflammation and inflammatory conditions, although more research is needed into its exact impact on dogs (4).

Incorporating these essential fatty acids into your dog’s grooming routine could go a long way into keeping any skin or hair issues under control, helping your dog to obtain that perfect shiny coat.

Help Treat Your Dog’s Flea Bites with Hemp Shampoo

As all dog owners know, sometimes fleas are just a way of life. But with hemp shampoo, they don’t have to take over.

Hemp’s anti-inflammatory, hydrating, and soothing ingredients make it an excellent addition to any pet shampoo.

Flea bites can result in your dog experiencing inflamed, itchy, and painful skin around the bite area. Some dogs may even develop a rash in response to a flea bite. Scratching this area can break the skin and leave your dog more susceptible to bacterial infection. And since it’s basically impossible to get a dog not to scratch their itchy flea bite, it’s important to treat flea bites early before they can develop into something more serious.

With hemp offering ingredients such as CBD, essential fatty acids, and other compounds like vitamin E, your dog will be better prepared to keep flea bites under control when using hemp shampoo.

Vitamin E, for example, has been found to significantly reduce inflammation markers in dogs, which is vital for keeping fleabites to a minimal size and reducing itchiness (5).

Keeping out bacterial infections is key to managing flea bites and keeping your dog healthy, happy, and looking good. A 2019 study evaluated the antibacterial effectiveness of hemp’s essential oils and found that, impressively, six hemp essential oils showed good antibacterial activity against a bacteria called Gram-positive bacteria. This study suggests that hemp may be able to inhibit bacterial proliferation, helping to keep your dog safe from pathogens (6).

Where Do I Find Hemp Shampoo?

We’re raving to you about hemp dog shampoo, but it might not be the most common item you come across in your day today.

For a quality hemp shampoo that is safe and effective for your dog, we recommend CannaLove™ Advanced Moisturizing Shampoo or CannaLove™ Antimicrobial Shampoo.

Adding hemp into your dog’s grooming routine has never been more comfortable with user-friendly products like these available.

The Bottom Line

Hydrating and protecting your dog’s coat is essential not just for their appearance but also for their health, comfort, and safety.

Hemp is an excellent addition to pet shampoo, thanks to its hydrating, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial qualities. By just switching up your pet’s grooming routine and using hemp shampoo instead, you could see a world of difference.
